The Story of Prophet Yunus (Jonah) in Islam

The Prophet Who Walked Away

Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him), known as Jonah in the Bible, was a messenger of God sent to the people of Nineveh, a great city in ancient Assyria (modern-day Iraq). His story is one of the most powerful tales of repentance, mercy, and the boundless forgiveness of God. It is a story of running away, being swallowed by a whale, and learning that you cannot escape God’s plan.

The Mission to Nineveh

Prophet Yunus was chosen by God to guide the people of Nineveh. They were a wealthy and powerful nation, but they had turned away from God. They worshipped idols and committed many sins. Yunus called them to worship one God and to abandon their evil ways. He delivered his message with sincerity, but the people ignored him. They refused to listen and mocked him. Day after day, he preached. Day after day, they rejected his message.

Frustrated and disheartened, Yunus made a grave decision. He abandoned his mission. He left the city of Nineveh without waiting for God’s permission. He thought that if they would not listen, he would simply leave them to their fate. He boarded a ship and sailed away, trying to escape his responsibilities and his people.

The Storm and the Whale

But you cannot run away from God. As the ship sailed on the open sea, a violent storm broke out. The winds howled, the waves rose like mountains, and the ship was tossed around violently. The sailors were terrified. They had never seen such a storm. They realized that this was no ordinary storm. Someone on board was the cause.

The sailors decided to cast lots to find out who was responsible. The lot fell on Yunus. They knew he was a righteous man, but he admitted his mistake. He told them, “Throw me into the sea, and the storm will calm down.” The sailors hesitated, but the storm grew worse. Finally, they threw him into the raging water.

As soon as he hit the water, the sea became calm. But Yunus was not finished. God commanded a great whale to swallow him. The whale opened its massive mouth and swallowed Yunus whole. He was alive inside the belly of the whale.

The Darkness and the Prayer

Imagine the darkness. It was pitch black. The darkness of the whale’s belly, the darkness of the deep sea, and the darkness of his own sin. Yunus was filled with regret. He realized his mistake. He could not escape God. He could not run away from his mission.

In that darkness, he cried out to God with a prayer of absolute humility and repentance. He said, “La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin.”
This means: “There is no deity except You. Glory be to You. Indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers.”

He did not say this prayer casually. He repeated it over and over. He acknowledged that he had made a mistake. He submitted fully to God. He knew that only God could save him.

The Rescue

God accepted Yunus’s repentance. He commanded the whale to swim to the shore and to expel Yunus onto the beach. The whale swam to the shore and gently spat Yunus onto the sand. He was weak, exhausted, and covered in salt and slime, but he was alive.

God caused a gourd plant to grow and provide him with shade. He rested and regained his strength. His prayer had been answered. He had been forgiven. And now, he understood something important: he could not run away from his destiny.

The Return to Nineveh

With renewed faith and humility, Prophet Yunus returned to Nineveh. He was not angry anymore. He was not frustrated. He went back with patience and sincerity. He delivered the same message: worship one God and repent.

But this time, something changed. The people of Nineveh had seen the storm. They had heard that a prophet had been swallowed by a whale and survived. They saw the miracle. They listened to Yunus and believed. They repented from their sins and turned back to God. All of them—from the rich to the poor, from the king to the common people—wore sackcloth and prayed for forgiveness.

God forgave them. He saved them from a terrible punishment. Yunus finally saw his mission succeed. He had tried to run away, but God brought him back. He had lost hope, but God gave him mercy.

The Lesson of Prophet Yunus

The story of Prophet Yunus teaches us that we can never run away from God. We may try to escape our duties, our problems, or our past mistakes, but God is always with us. It also teaches us that sincere repentance is always accepted. When Yunus said his prayer from the belly of the whale, God forgave him. No matter how dark our situation, no matter how deep our sin, we can always turn back to God.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) loved this story. He often repeated the prayer of Yunus:
“La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin.”

He taught his followers to say it whenever they were in distress. If a prophet in the belly of a whale used this prayer, then it must be powerful.
