Adverbial of Position: Bukan Sekadar “di Sini, di Sana”

Kebanyakan pembelajar bahasa Inggris Indonesia tahu here dan there. Juga in, on, at.

Adverbial of position menjawab pertanyaan where. Letak benda, orang, atau kejadian. Tampaknya sederhana. Tapi kesalahan kecil mengubah arti atau membuat kalimat terdengar aneh.

Mari bedah tuntas.

Aturan Dasar Letak Adverbial of Position

Dalam bahasa Indonesia, Anda bisa bilang:

  • Dia di pasar makan.
  • Dia makan di pasar.

Dua kalimat sama-sama benar.

Rumus: Subjek + Kata Kerja + (Objek) + Adverbial of Position

Contoh:

  • She eats in the market. (Benar)
  • She in the market eats. (Salah)
  • In the market she eats. (Bisa untuk penekanan puitis, tapi tidak umum)

Perhatikan: in the market setelah eats, bukan sebelum.

Jika ada objek, adverbial posisi setelah objek.

  • He bought fish at the harbor. (Bukan He bought at the harbor fish)
  • I met my friend at the station. (Bukan I met at the station my friend)

Satu pengecualian: kata kerja to be (am, is, are, was, were). Setelah to be, adverbial posisi bisa langsung mengikuti.

  • She is in the kitchen.
  • They were at the cinema.

Tapi ini tetap “setelah kata kerja”. Kata kerjanya to be, maka adverbial di belakangnya.

Preposisi Posisi yang Paling Sering Salah

In, On, At

Tiga kata depan ini penyebab kebanyakan kesalahan.

PreposisiPenggunaanContoh
inruang tertutup, area luas (kota, negara, ruangan)in the room, in Jakarta, in the box
onpermukaan, jalan, lantai, pulauon the table, on Jalan Sudirman, on Bali (pulau)
attitik spesifik, alamat lengkap, lokasi kegiatanat the door, at 123 Main Street, at school

Kesalahan klasik:

Salah: I live on Jakarta.
Benar: I live in Jakarta. (Jakarta adalah kota, area luas)

Salah: She is in the bus stop.
Benar: She is at the bus stop. (halte adalah titik, bukan ruang tertutup)

Salah: The book is at the table.
Benar: The book is on the table. (permukaan)

Tabel pembantu:

LokasiInOnAt
rumahin the house (di dalam)on the roof (di atas atap)at home (secara umum)
mobilin the caron the car (di atas mobil)–
keretain the train (Inggris) / on the train (AS)––
pesawaton the plane––
sekolah––at school (kegiatan)
alamat––at 10 Jalan Merpati

Above vs Over, Below vs Under

Above dan over sama-sama di atas. Tapi:

Contoh:

  • The light is above the table. (lampu di atas meja, tidak menyentuh)
  • The plane flew over the city. (pesawat melintas di atas kota)
  • She held an umbrella over her head. (payung menutupi kepala)

Below dan under sama-sama di bawah. Tapi:

Contoh:

  • The cat is under the table. (kucing di bawah meja, mungkin tersembunyi)
  • The temperature is below zero.
  • We live below the hill.

Jangan tulis The temperature is under zero. Itu salah.

In front of vs Before

In front of untuk posisi fisik di depan sesuatu.

Benar: The car is in front of the house.
Salah: The car is before the house.

Benar: He stood before the judge. (abstrak, di hadapan hakim)
Benar: She arrived before me. (waktu)

Between vs Among

  • The ball is between the two chairs. (dua kursi)
  • She is hiding among the trees. (banyak pohon, tidak disebut satu per satu)

Kesalahan: He sat among his two friends. (harusnya between, karena dua orang)

Kata Keterangan Posisi Tanpa Preposisi

Here, there, everywhere, nowhere, somewhere, inside, outside, upstairs, downstairs, abroad, home (tanpa to atau at).

Contoh:

  • Come here. (bukan come to here)
  • She is upstairs. (bukan on upstairs)
  • He went home. (bukan went to home – home di sini adverb, bukan noun)
  • They live abroad. (bukan in abroad)

Kesalahan besar: I go to there. Tidak. I go there.

Home kasus khusus. Go home benar. Go to home salah. Tapi go to my home benar karena my home adalah kata benda.

Posisi Adverbial of Position dalam Kalimat Negatif

Negasi not diletakkan sebelum adverbial of position? Tergantung kata kerja.

Jika kata kerjanya to be:

  • She is not at home. (not sebelum adverbial)

Jika kata kerjanya kata kerja aksi:

  • I did not eat at the restaurant. (not setelah auxiliary, adverbial tetap di akhir)

Jangan pisahkan adverbial dari akhir kalimat.

Salah: I did not at the restaurant eat.
Benar: I did not eat at the restaurant.

Posisi Keterangan Waktu dan Keterangan Tempat dalam Satu Kalimat

Jika satu kalimat punya adverbial of time (waktu) dan adverbial of position (tempat), mana yang lebih dulu?

Aturan baku: Tempat dulu, baru waktu.

Contoh:

  • She was born in Bandung in 1995. (Tempat → Waktu)
  • I met him at the station last night.

Bukan She was born in 1995 in Bandung.

  • In the middle of the forest, they found an old cabin.
  • At the top of the mountain stood a temple.

Bukan In the forest found they a cabin (salah).

Latihan 1: Pilih Preposisi yang Tepat

  1. “The restaurant is _ Jalan Malioboro.” (on – nama jalan pakai on)
  2. “She left her phone _ the sofa.” (on – permukaan)
  3. “We met _ the airport.” (at – titik/lokasi)
  4. “The children are playing _ the garden.” (in – area terbuka dengan batas)
  5. “He lives _ the third floor.” (on – lantai)
  6. “The temperature dropped _ 10 degrees Celsius.” (below – suhu)
  7. “She hung the painting _ the fireplace.” (above – di atas tanpa menutupi)
  8. “The cat hid _ the bed.” (under – tertutupi)

Latihan 2: Perbaiki Letak Adverbial dalam Kalimat

  1. I at the library studied yesterday. → I studied at the library yesterday.
  2. She is in the kitchen cooking. → Sudah benar. Tapi jika ingin lebih natural, She is cooking in the kitchen. (kata kerja aksi setelah subjek, adverbial di akhir)
  3. They went to the beach last week at 8 AM. → They went to the beach at 8 AM last week. (waktu spesifik dulu, lalu waktu umum? Sebenarnya aturan: waktu pendek sebelum waktu panjang. At 8 AM adalah waktu, last week juga waktu. Urutan bebas, tapi lebih natural at 8 AM last week)
  4. He doesn’t at home sleep. → He doesn’t sleep at home.
  5. We on the bus met. → We met on the bus.

Latihan 3: Terjemahkan ke Bahasa Inggris dengan Adverbial Posisi yang Benar

  1. “Dia bekerja di kantor.” → She works in the office.
  2. “Mereka berenang di laut.” → They swim in the sea.
  3. “Buku itu ada di atas meja.” → The book is on the table.
  4. “Saya bertemu dia di stasiun kereta.” → I met him at the train station.
  5. “Anjing itu tidur di bawah pohon.” → The dog sleeps under the tree.

Frasa Posisi yang Tidak Perlu Preposisi

Beberapa kata keterangan posisi sudah lengkap tanpa preposisi. Kesalahan umum adalah menambahkan to atau at di depan.

BenarSalah
Go homeGo to home
Come hereCome to here
Put it therePut it to there
She is outsideShe is at outside
They live abroadThey live in abroad
He went downstairsHe went to downstairs

Ingat: home, here, there, outside, inside, downstairs, upstairs, abroad, everywhere, nowhere, somewhere adalah adverbs. Tidak butuh preposisi.

Kapan Here dan There Boleh di Awal Kalimat?

Here dan there bisa di awal kalimat untuk menarik perhatian, biasanya diikuti kata kerja to be atau kata kerja gerakan, lalu subjek.

  • Here comes the bus. (bukan here the bus comes)
  • There goes my phone. (bukan there my phone goes)
  • Here is your key.

Dalam beberapa kasus, memindahkan adverbial of position mengubah arti.

  • He saw the dog in the garden. (Anjing di taman, dia melihatnya)
  • In the garden, he saw the dog. (Dia di taman, melihat anjing – entah anjing di mana)

Perbedaan tipis. Tapi dalam tulisan yang presisi, perhatikan ini.

Adverbial of Position dalam Kalimat Tanya

  • Where do you live?
  • Is she at home?
  • Did you see him at the party?

Jangan tulis Did you at the party see him?

Proyek Akhir: Paragraf Deskripsi

Tulis paragraf 80 kata mendeskripsikan kamar tidur Anda. Gunakan minimal 5 adverbial of position yang berbeda (in, on, at, under, above, below, between, dll). Pastikan letaknya benar di akhir kalimat atau setelah to be.

Contoh:

I sleep in a small room. My bed is against the wall. The window is above the bed. My desk is under the window. I keep my laptop on the desk. My shoes are under the bed. My backpack hangs behind the door. The trash can is in the corner. I put my books on the shelf next to the desk.

Apakah preposisi tepat (on the desk, bukan at the desk)? Apakah tidak ada to sebelum home/here/there?

Adverbial of position menjawab where. Home, here, there, outside, inside, downstairs, upstairs, abroad tidak butuh preposisi. Jika satu kalimat punya waktu dan tempat, tempat dulu, baru waktu. Hindari meletakkan adverbial di tengah kalimat. Hindari preposisi berlebih. Ikuti pola: Subjek – Kata Kerja – (Objek) – Tempat.

Mereka langsung tahu Anda bukan penutur asli ketika Anda bilang I go to there atau She is on Jakarta.

Kabar baiknya: aturannya sedikit. Hafalkan in-on-at, ingat home/here/there tanpa to, letakkan di akhir. Tiga kebiasaan ini akan membersihkan 90% kesalahan Anda.

Sekarang buka catatan. Tulis 10 kalimat tentang benda-benda di sekitar Anda. Setiap kalimat harus punya adverbial of position di akhir. Baca keras-keras.

Latihan 5 menit sehari, seminggu.
