Absolute Phrase: Frase Bebas yang Membuat Kalimat Anda Lebih Hidup

Anda mungkin sudah tahu participial phrase (frasa partisip). Walking to school, I saw a cat.

Mari bedah tuntas.

Apa Itu Absolute Phrase?

Absolute phrase adalah kelompok kata yang memodifikasi seluruh kalimat utama, bukan satu kata tertentu. Frase ini terdiri dari kata benda + partisip (atau adjective/prepositional phrase), dan berdiri bebas (absolut) dari struktur tata bahasa kalimat utama.

Ciri utama:

  • Tidak terhubung ke kalimat utama dengan kata penghubung (because, although, when)
  • Memiliki subjek sendiri (berupa kata benda)
  • Biasanya dipisahkan dengan koma dari kalimat utama
  • Bisa dihilangkan tanpa merusak struktur tata bahasa kalimat utama

Contoh paling sederhana:

Weather permitting, we will have a picnic.

Weather permitting adalah absolute phrase. Weather = subjek frase. Permitting = partisip (present participle). Frase ini memberi kondisi. Kalimat utama we will have a picnic tetap utuh secara grammar tanpa frase itu.

Struktur Absolute Phrase

Rumus dasar: Noun + Participle (atau Noun + Adjective/Noun/Prepositional Phrase)

1. Noun + Present Participle (-ing)

Menunjukkan aksi aktif atau simultan.

  • The sun rising, we started our journey. (Matahari terbit, kami memulai perjalanan)
  • His heart racing, he opened the door. (Jantungnya berdebar, dia membuka pintu)
  • No one else coming, she decided to leave. (Tidak ada orang lain yang datang, dia memutuskan pergi)

2. Noun + Past Participle (V3)

Menunjukkan aksi pasif atau sudah selesai.

  • The work finished, they went home. (Pekerjaan selesai, mereka pulang)
  • His voice drowned by the noise, he gave up shouting. (Suaranya tenggelam oleh kebisingan, dia berhenti berteriak)
  • The decision made, there was no turning back. (Keputusan sudah dibuat, tidak ada jalan mundur)

3. Noun + Adjective

  • His face pale, he walked into the hospital. (Wajahnya pucat, dia berjalan masuk rumah sakit)
  • The room empty, she finally cried. (Ruangan kosong, dia akhirnya menangis)
  • Hands free, he climbed faster. (Tangan bebas, dia memanjat lebih cepat)

4. Noun + Prepositional Phrase

  • A book in his hand, he entered the classroom. (Buku di tangannya, dia masuk kelas)
  • Tears in her eyes, she thanked him. (Air mata di matanya, dia berterima kasih)
  • The children at school, she had time to clean. (Anak-anak di sekolah, dia punya waktu bersih-bersih)

5. Noun + Noun

  • A loyal friend all his life, he never felt alone. (Seorang teman setia sepanjang hidupnya, dia tidak pernah merasa sendiri)
  • His only son a doctor, he was very proud. (Anak satu-satunya dokter, dia sangat bangga)

Fungsi Absolute Phrase

1. Menyatakan Waktu (Time)

Tanpa absolute phrase: When the rain stopped, we continued playing. (pakai when)
Dengan absolute phrase: The rain stopping, we continued playing.

Lebih ringkas, lebih sastra.

2. Menyatakan Sebab (Cause)

Tanpa: Because his leg was broken, he couldn’t walk.
Dengan: His leg broken, he couldn’t walk.

3. Menyatakan Kondisi (Condition)

Tanpa: If the weather is good, we will sail.
Dengan: Weather permitting, we will sail.

4. Menyatakan Deskripsi (Description)

Tanpa: She stood there and her arms were crossed.
Dengan: She stood there, her arms crossed.

5. Memberi Informasi Tambahan (Accompanying Circumstance)

Tanpa: The soldiers marched forward and their flags were waving.
Dengan: The soldiers marched forward, their flags waving.

Perbedaan dengan Frasa Lain

Absolute Phrase vs Participial Phrase

Participial phrase (frasa partisip) TIDAK punya subjek sendiri. Subjeknya sama dengan kalimat utama.

  • Walking to school, I saw a cat. (Saya yang walking)
  • Finished with homework, he watched TV. (Dia yang finished)

Absolute phrase punya subjek sendiri yang berbeda dari subjek kalimat utama.

  • The cat sleeping, I left quietly. (Kucing yang sleeping, bukan saya)
  • His work finished, he went home. (Pekerjaan yang finished, bukan dia)

Absolute Phrase vs Appositive

Appositive memberi informasi ulang tentang kata benda di sebelahnya.

  • My brother, a skilled carpenter, built this table. (a skilled carpenter memberi info tambahan tentang my brother)

Absolute phrase memodifikasi seluruh kalimat.

  • A skilled carpenter, my brother built this table. (Bisa diartikan because he is a skilled carpenter)

Posisi Absolute Phrase dalam Kalimat

Absolute phrase bisa di awal, tengah, atau akhir kalimat. Selalu dipisah koma.

Awal:

The meeting over, everyone left.

Tengah:

The old man, his hands trembling, signed the document.

Akhir:

She ran out of the room, her face covered in tears.

Contoh Absolute Phrase dalam Sastra dan Berita

Dalam novel The Old Man and the Sea karya Hemingway:

His hands raw, he pulled the line.

Dalam laporan berita:

The storm approaching, residents were urged to evacuate.

Dalam pidato politik:

Our resources limited, we must prioritize.

Kesalahan Umum

1. Subjek Frase Tidak Jelas

Salah: Walking home, the rain started. (Siapa yang walking? Rain?)
Ini dangling participle, bukan absolute phrase karena tidak punya subjek sendiri.

Benar (absolute phrase): The rain starting, I ran home. (Subjek frase the rain)

2. Lupa Koma

Salah: His heart pounding he opened the door.
Benar: His heart pounding, he opened the door.

3. Menggunakan Kata Penghubung

Salah: Because his voice trembling, he stopped speaking.
Benar: His voice trembling, he stopped speaking.

Absolute phrase tidak butuh because, when, although.

4. Subjek Frase Sama dengan Subjek Utama (Berlebihan)

Salah: He, his hands shaking, he opened the door. (Dua he)
Benar: His hands shaking, he opened the door.

5. Menggunakan Being Secara Berlebihan

Tidak salah, tapi bisa dihilangkan.

  • The weather being nice, we went out. (bisa The weather nice, we went out – adjective)

Latihan 1: Identifikasi Absolute Phrase

Cari absolute phrase dalam kalimat berikut:

  1. The exam finished, the students left the room. → The exam finished
  2. She sat quietly, her eyes fixed on the horizon. → her eyes fixed on the horizon
  3. No other choice remaining, he accepted the offer. → No other choice remaining
  4. The car, its engine smoking, pulled to the side. → its engine smoking
  5. The president having resigned, the vice president took over. → The president having resigned

Latihan 2: Ubah Kalimat Biasa Menjadi Absolute Phrase

Ubah kalimat dengan kata penghubung menjadi absolute phrase.

  1. Because the test was difficult, many students failed. → The test difficult, many students failed. (atau The test being difficult)
  2. When the sun had set, they built a campfire. → The sun having set, they built a campfire.
  3. His leg was broken, so he couldn’t continue. → His leg broken, he couldn’t continue.
  4. If the budget allows, we will hire more staff. → The budget allowing, we will hire more staff.
  5. She stood there and her arms were folded. → She stood there, her arms folded.

Latihan 3: Lengkapi Absolute Phrase

Tambahkan noun atau participle yang sesuai:

  1. _ permitting, we will play outside. → Weather
  2. _ finished, they celebrated. → The work (atau The project)
  3. His voice _, no one could hear him. → drowned (past participle) atau fading
  4. _, she walked into the interview. → Her palms sweating atau Heart pounding
  5. The lights _, the building looked scary. → off (adjective) atau flickering

Proyek Akhir: Paragraf dengan Absolute Phrase

Tulis paragraf 60 kata yang mendeskripsikan suasana pagi hari di pasar tradisional. Gunakan minimal 3 absolute phrase.

Contoh:

The sun barely rising, vendors began setting up their stalls. Their voices still hoarse from sleep, they called out to early customers. Fish still fresh from the night’s catch, the market smelled of salt and seaweed. A child, his hand held tight by his mother, pointed at a basket of mangoes. The day just starting, everything felt possible.

Periksa: The sun barely rising, Their voices still hoarse, fish still fresh (noun + adjective, tanpa being), the day just starting (noun + present participle). Semua memodifikasi kalimat utama, punya subjek sendiri, dipisah koma.

Absolute Phrase dengan With

Kadang absolute phrase bisa diawali with tanpa mengubah fungsi.

  • With the test finished, they relaxed. = The test finished, they relaxed.
  • With her heart pounding, she opened the door. = Her heart pounding, she opened the door.

With membuatnya lebih informal. Untuk tulisan formal, tanpa with lebih kuat.

Absolute Phrase dalam Bentuk Negatif

Tambahkan no atau without.

  • No one left to help, he worked alone.
  • Without a word spoken, they understood each other.

Absolute Phrase dengan There dan It

  • There being no other option, he surrendered. (agak formal)
  • It being Sunday, the library was closed. (umum)

Absolute phrase adalah kelompok kata dengan struktur noun + participle (atau noun + adjective/prepositional phrase) yang berdiri bebas dari kalimat utama, dipisah koma, dan memodifikasi seluruh kalimat. Gunakan untuk menyatakan waktu, sebab, kondisi, atau deskripsi tanpa kata penghubung. Bedanya dari participial phrase: absolute phrase punya subjek sendiri yang berbeda dari subjek kalimat utama. Jangan lupa koma. Jangan tambah kata penghubung. Latih dengan mengubah klausa when, because, if menjadi absolute phrase.

Absolute phrase adalah alat penulis mahir. Dengan menguasainya, Anda bisa menulis kalimat yang lebih padat, lebih puitis, dan lebih efisien tanpa kehilangan makna. Mulailah dengan dua pola termudah: noun + present participle (The rain falling…) dan noun + past participle (The work done…). Setelah lancar, tambahkan noun + adjective (His face red…). Jangan coba semua pola sekaligus. Latih satu pola per minggu.

Sekarang buka catatan. Tulis tiga kalimat tentang aktivitas Anda pagi ini menggunakan absolute phrase di awal kalimat.

Contoh: My coffee finished, I opened my laptop.

Lalu tulis tiga kalimat dengan absolute phrase di akhir.

Contoh: I opened my laptop, my coffee finished.

Rasakan bedanya. Absolute phrase bukan grammar untuk ujian. Ini alat untuk membuat tulisan Anda hidup.
