Banyak pembelajar bahasa Inggris Indonesia tahu kata suppose. Tapi kebanyakan menggunakannya salah.
Mereka bilang I suppose to go ketika maksudnya saya seharusnya pergi. Mereka tulis suppose ketika butuh supposed.
Mari bedah sampai akar.
Suppose (bentuk dasar): Anggap, Kira, Asumsikan
Contoh:
- I suppose you’re right. (Saya kira kamu benar.)
- Suppose we miss the train. What then? (Anggap kita ketinggalan kereta. Bagaimana?)
- Let us suppose the price doubles. (Anggap harganya naik dua kali lipat.)
I think lebih kuat. I suppose terdengar seperti saya kira begitu, tapi tidak 100% yakin.
Let’s suppose vs What if
Orang Indonesia sering terjebak menerjemahkan misalkan jadi what if. What if lebih ke pertanyaan hipotetis dengan nuansa cemas. Let’s suppose netral, seperti ajakan berpikir bersama.
Contoh perbedaan:
- What if the plane crashes? (Bagaimana kalau pesawat jatuh? – cemas)
- Let’s suppose the plane is delayed. (Anggap pesawat terlambat – netral, hitungan)
Supposed (bentuk lampau atau adjective): Seharusnya
Ini sumber kesalahan terbesar.
Supposed dengan -d muncul dalam dua situasi:
1. Past tense dari suppose (lampau)
- I supposed the meeting was at 10. (Saya mengira rapat jam 10.)
- They supposed the road was closed. (Mereka menganggap jalan tutup.)
Contoh:
- You are supposed to wear a helmet. (Kamu seharusnya pakai helm – kewajiban)
- The train is supposed to arrive at 8. (Kereta seharusnya tiba jam 8 – jadwal/ekspektasi)
- She was supposed to call me yesterday. (Dia seharusnya menelepon saya kemarin – tapi tidak dilakukan)
Perhatikan: selalu pakai to be (am/is/are/was/were) sebelum supposed to. Bukan I supposed to go, tapi I am supposed to go.
Kesalahan Nomor Wahid
Tulisan: I suppose to come on time.
Maksud: I am supposed to come on time. (Saya seharusnya datang tepat waktu.)
Hilangkan am, hancur artinya.
I Suppose: Ungkapan Merendah yang Khas
I suppose berdiri sendiri sebagai filler atau penanda keraguan sopan.
- I suppose so.
- That’s one way to do it, I suppose. (Itu salah satu caranya, saya kira – sopan tapi meremehkan)
- I suppose we have no choice. (Sepertinya kita tidak punya pilihan – menerima kenyataan pahit)
I suppose lebih lemah dari I think. I think menunjukkan pendapat. I suppose menunjukkan saya tidak punya keberatan, meskipun tidak sepenuhnya setuju.
Dalam percakapan bisnis Inggris, I suppose bisa terdengar pasif-agresif. Jika bos bilang I suppose we could try your method, artinya saya tidak percaya ini akan berhasil, tapi saya izinkan saja.
Hati-hati menggunakannya.
- Suppose he refuses to sign. What will you do? (Andaikan dia menolak tanda tangan. Kamu akan apa?)
- Suppose we leave now. We might still catch the bus. (Andaikan kita berangkat sekarang. Mungkin masih bisa naik bus.)
Supposing (dengan -ing) juga umum:
- Supposing the test is harder than usual, how will you prepare?
Beda dengan if: Suppose mengundang imajinasi.
- I _ to finish this report by Friday. (suppose/supposed/am supposed)
- _ we change the plan? (Suppose/Supposed/Supposing)
- She _ the keys were in her bag, but they weren’t. (supposes/supposed/supposing)
- You are not _ to enter this room. (suppose/supposed/supposing)
- I _ so, but don’t quote me. (suppose/supposed/am supposed)
Jawaban:
- am supposed (kewajiban, perlu am)
- Suppose (ajakan berandai)
- supposed (past tense dari suppose)
- supposed (are not supposed to = tidak seharusnya)
- suppose (I suppose so)
Perbedaan Should dan Supposed To
Banyak yang mengira supposed to sama dengan should. Mirip tapi tidak sama.
| Aspek | Should | Supposed To |
|---|---|---|
| Kekuatan | Saran, opini moral | Ekspektasi eksternal, aturan, jadwal |
| Sumber | Pembicara sendiri | Orang lain, sistem, norma |
| Konsekuensi | Lebih ringan | Bisa ada sanksi |
| Contoh | You should exercise (saran) | You are supposed to exercise (aturan, misal dari dokter) |
Dalam negatif:
- You shouldn’t smoke (kamu sebaiknya tidak merokok – saran)
- You are not supposed to smoke here (tidak boleh merokok di sini – aturan tempat)
Supposed to membawa beban diharapkan oleh orang lain. Should membawa beban saya pribadi menyarankan.
Kesalahan Umum Lainnya
1. Melewatkan to be dalam supposed to
Salah: He supposed to arrive at 9.
Benar: He is supposed to arrive at 9.
2. Menulis suppose to tanpa d
Salah: We are suppose to wait.
Benar: We are supposed to wait.
Ingat: -d wajib dalam supposed to. Bentuk dasarnya suppose tanpa d hanya untuk mengira/berasumsi.
3. Menggunakan supposed tanpa to untuk maksud kewajiban
Salah: I am supposed finish this.
Benar: I am supposed to finish this.
To tidak boleh hilang. Frasa utuhnya supposed to sebagai satu unit.
4. Mencampur suppose dengan assume
Assume lebih kuat, sering tanpa dasar. Suppose lebih kira-kira atau ajakan berpikir.
- I assume you have a ticket (saya asumsikan, tegas)
- I suppose you have a ticket (saya kira, kurang yakin)
- Suppose the project fails. (Anggap proyek gagal)
- Suppose I refuse. (Anggap saya menolak)
Ini bukan kalimat tanya. Tidak butuh what if.
Contoh Kesalahan dalam Tulisan Nyata (dari pelajar)
Kesalahan asli yang sering muncul:
“I suppose to wake up early every day, but I always late.”
Dua kesalahan:
- I suppose to → harusnya I am supposed to
- I always late → I am always late
Perbaikan:
“I am supposed to wake up early every day, but I am always late.”
Kesalahan lain:
“She supposed be here by now.”
Perbaikan:
“She was supposed to be here by now.”
Not supposed to: Larangan Tidak Langsung
Not supposed to lebih sopan dari must not atau cannot. Dipakai untuk aturan sosial atau kebijakan tempat.
- You’re not supposed to use your phone during the meeting. (Sebaiknya tidak, aturan tidak tertulis)
- We’re not supposed to tell anyone yet. (Masih rahasia)
Bandingkan dengan must not yang keras:
- You must not smoke in the hospital (dilarang keras, bisa dikeluarkan)
Supposed to have + past participle: Ekspektasi yang Gagal di Masa Lalu
Ini struktur tingkat lanjut. Ungkapan seharusnya sudah terjadi tapi tidak.
- He was supposed to have called by now. (Dia seharusnya sudah menelepon sekarang – tapi belum)
- They were supposed to have finished the project. (Mereka seharusnya sudah selesai – tapi nyatanya tidak)
Perhatikan was/were (bukan am/is/are) karena merujuk ke masa lalu.
Tabel Ringkas Semua Bentuk Suppose

| supposed (past tense) | Kiraan masa lalu | I supposed he was lying | Saya mengira dulu |
| supposed to | Kewajiban/ekspektasi | You’re supposed to pay | Seharusnya |
| not supposed to | Larangan halus | You’re not supposed to park here | Tidak boleh |
| I suppose so | Persetujuan ragu | “Is it okay?” “I suppose so” | Kurasa begitu |
| supposed to have + V3 | Ekspektasi gagal | She was supposed to have arrived | Seharusnya sudah |
Latihan Menulis: Ubah Kalimat Ini
Tulis ulang agar benar secara tata bahasa:
- I suppose to call my mom every Sunday, but I always forget.
- What are we suppose to bring for the potluck?
- She supposed the exam was easy, but it wasn’t.
- You are not suppose enter this area without permission.
- Supposed we leave earlier, would we avoid traffic?
Jawaban:
- I am supposed to call my mom every Sunday, but I always forget.
- What are we supposed to bring for the potluck?
- She supposed the exam was easy, but it wasn’t.
- You are not supposed to enter this area without permission.
- Suppose we leave earlier, would we avoid traffic?
Cara Menghafal Tanpa Lupa
Gunakan asosiasi:
- Suppose = Saya punya pendapat (tanpa d, tanpa to)
- Supposed to = Seharusnya → ada to dan d karena sudah ditentukan (ada aturan)
- I suppose = Saya kira (lemah, ragu)
Buat kartu memori:
Sisi depan: I _ to go → isi dengan supposed
Sisi belakang: I am supposed to go
Uji diri setiap pagi 1 menit.
Suppose dalam Bahasa Lisan vs Tulisan
Lisan: orang kadang mengatakan I’m supposed to menjadi I sposta (penggabungan). Tapi jangan meniru saat menulis.
Tulisan formal: hindari I suppose jika Anda ingin tegas. Pakai I think atau I believe.
Tulisan informal: I suppose bagus untuk nada santai dan merendah.
Proyek Akhir: Paragraf Kontekstual
Tulis paragraf 80 kata tentang rencana akhir pekan Anda. Gunakan:
- I am supposed to (kewajiban dari luar, misal janji)
- I suppose (asumsi pribadi)
- not supposed to (sesuatu yang tidak boleh dilakukan)
Contoh:
“This weekend I am supposed to help my brother move to his new apartment. We agreed last week. But looking at the weather forecast, I suppose it will rain. The moving truck is not supposed to operate in heavy rain for safety reasons. I hope we can reschedule.”
Periksa: apakah I am supposed to benar? Ya (kewajiban janji). Apakah I suppose benar? Ya (asumsi tidak yakin). Apakah not supposed to benar? Ya (aturan/ketentuan).
Suppose dan supposed bukanlah musuh bahasa Inggris Anda. Hanya perlu satu kebiasaan: setiap kali Anda ingin bilang seharusnya, tulis am/is/are supposed to. Bukan suppose to. Bukan I supposed to. Tiga kata terpisah: am, supposed, to.
Jika Anda masih ragu, uji dengan mengganti ke bahasa Indonesia: seharusnya → supposed to. mengira → suppose (tanpa to). Dua fungsi berbeda. Dua bentuk berbeda. Jangan campur.
Sekarang buka catatan. Baca keras-keras. Bedanya akan terasa di lidah dan telinga.
Bahasa Inggris itu naluri. Latih naluri Anda.
